1872-M Medal Die Alignment Full Sovereign Shield Reverse SP
10-Mar-2010 Walter, Duffy has one in AU55-ish for $11,000. 10-Mar-2010 I find it's better to leave the rarities unvalued, they appear too infrequently to value accurately, but for other readers, some recent appearances of the coin:
- A dealer in UK offered me one for about AUD 20,000 in uncirculated (probably SP62) - Nobles auctioned off one for around AUD 40,000 (if I remember correctly) which would've been around SP65 and came with accompanying documentation. - And then Duffy's one which he's had for over a year now. 11-Mar-2010 If you don't mind me asking, what's so significant about this variety? Why the high price tag when compared with other sovereign varieties? 11-Mar-2010 This isn't technically a variety, but rather a specimen striking. The first 30 coins struck by the Melbourne mint were Shield sovereigns struck in medal die alignment and presented to dignatories, mint workers, etc. They weren't intended for circulation (but at least one example is known to have been circulated).
