New Blue Sheet | THE COIN FORUMS

As you will have noticed, the Blue Sheet version 2.0 has been finally released. Apart from this forum, a number of major changes have been made. We invite you to browse around on a free test account:

Great work walter. I really do like the history in the certified coin search page. I looked up a half sovereign I bought on Ebay and guess what? the guy bought from 'Heritage Auction Galleries' a couple of months ago for half the price! Its amazing how these coins get around. :)

Just had a look, you have a lot of nice coins there.

They've been copied over to the new system so once it's up and running you'll be able to continue.

They say that simplicity is the height of sophistication - I find the new layout much more complex to navigate with too many hierachical steps required to look at similar coins. For example, with Shield Reverse Full Sovereigns - why have 3 pages when you can have 1? Also, the enlarged navigation buttons are so large that I find myelft having to scroll down all the time.

I agree with what you're saying, and as it is it seems overly complex, but the new design was designed to cater for an expanding field of coverage. The depth of decimal coins (once we expand into them) would see the home page expand greatly just to cover them in their entirety if we left it as the old system was.

As it is, the Blue Sheet shows two levels of depth per page, e.g. the first page shows Australian Gold and it's category children, if you click on Half Penny, you'll see it divided by both rulers and the types. This halves the amount of clicks needed however any further increase of depth visible will see page length increase dramatically (and wouldn't decrease the amount of clicks for pre-decimal coins).

To cater for this, we introduced the "Find a Coin" link on the home page which allows you to type the date of the coin and it will find all matching coins for a simple 3 click to any coin interface.

The enlarged navigation buttons was the best solution we could come up with to both show the image of the coin (needed for new or non-collectors to find their way around) and some basic information about them. At minimum they needed to be the height of a crown (39mm) with some room for margins, so while we could have cut down on the width, we couldn't work out a stylish way of achieving this (considering that target viewers would be reading the Blue Sheet at various display resolutions, we would have to have catered for a dynamic screen width to avoid left-right scrolling).

A lot of thought did go into the design and this was the best we could come up with that both supported easy navigation, and our own ideas of expanding the guide.
